Root Causes of Conflict: WhyWars Persist Without Resolution

Sadhguru
Sadhguru

7 min read

Sadhguru addresses why the Russia-Ukraine war persists despite military engagement, arguing that the root causes of war lie not in political grievances alone but in the psychological, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of human consciousness. He contends that wars cannot be ended through military means or political negotiation without addressing the fundamental human tendencies toward aggression, fear, and disconnection that fuel conflict. True resolution requires a shift in human consciousness itself—a recognition of our fundamental interconnectedness and the cultivation of inner stability and wisdom.

What Are the True Roots of Prolonged Conflict?

When discussing the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Sadhguru moves beyond the surface-level political and territorial explanations typically offered in mainstream analysis. He suggests that while geopolitical factors, historical grievances, and nationalist sentiments play a role, they are not the fundamental cause of war. Rather, wars persist because of deeper dimensions of human nature that remain unaddressed in conventional peace negotiations and diplomatic efforts.

According to Sadhguru's perspective, human beings are driven by emotions and psychological impulses that make them susceptible to aggression when circumstances align. Fear, the desire for power, historical resentment, and tribal identity—these emotional and psychological states create the fertile ground in which conflict can take root. When a population is gripped by fear or nationalist fervor, when people feel threatened or humiliated, they become capable of supporting and waging war. Without addressing these underlying states of mind, political solutions alone remain superficial.

Why Military Solutions Cannot Resolve War

Sadhguru emphasizes that military interventions, while sometimes necessary to contain violence, do not address the root causes of conflict. When one side uses military force to suppress another, it often entrenches the very conditions that sustain conflict—fear, resentment, and a sense of violation among the population. This cycle perpetuates itself: military action creates casualties, trauma, and increased hostility, which then justifies further military response.

The fundamental problem is that military force operates at the level of behavior and external outcomes, but it does not transform the inner states of consciousness that generate the impulse toward conflict in the first place. A ceasefire achieved through military pressure may halt fighting temporarily, but without a genuine shift in how people think and feel, the underlying conditions for renewed conflict remain intact. History bears this out: conflicts often resume years or decades after military resolution because the psychological and emotional foundations of hostility were never truly healed.

The Role of Fear and Identity in Perpetuating Conflict

Central to Sadhguru's analysis is the role of fear as a driver of conflict. When people feel existentially threatened—whether by foreign powers, ideological differences, or cultural displacement—they become willing to support and participate in warfare as a form of self-defense or self-preservation. This fear can be manipulated by political leaders and media narratives, amplifying existing tensions and making populations more receptive to military action.

Additionally, strong identification with national, ethnic, or religious identity can create an "us versus them" mentality that makes violence against the other group seem justified or even necessary. When people derive their sense of self and security primarily from group identity, they perceive threats to the group as threats to themselves. This psychological dynamic makes compromise and reconciliation difficult, because concessions are experienced as personal betrayals or existential losses.

What Would It Take to Genuinely End Wars?

Sadhguru suggests that genuine peace requires a transformation at the level of human consciousness itself. This does not mean waiting passively for all humans to achieve enlightenment; rather, it requires a critical mass of people—leaders, influencers, and ordinary citizens—to develop greater emotional stability, wisdom, and a felt sense of connection to all of humanity. When people are grounded in inner stability and clarity, they are less reactive, less susceptible to fear-based decision-making, and more capable of recognizing the humanity in those designated as enemies.

This transformation involves what might be called spiritual or contemplative development—practices and perspectives that expand awareness beyond the narrow confines of personal or national interest. Such perspectives help people recognize that war ultimately harms everyone, that the divisions we draw between "us" and "them" are ultimately artificial, and that genuine security comes through cooperation and mutual flourishing rather than domination and control.

Sadhguru also implies that addressing root causes requires changes at the systemic and environmental level. The Save Soil movement, which he envisions, is one example of how humanity might shift toward cooperation and away from conflict—by recognizing shared threats to human survival and responding with collective action. When people are focused on solutions to existential problems like environmental degradation, they are less likely to engage in destructive conflicts with one another.

Can Political Negotiation Work Without Inner Change?

While Sadhguru does not dismiss the value of diplomacy and negotiation, his analysis suggests that such efforts remain fragile and temporary without a corresponding shift in the emotional and psychological states of the populations involved. A peace treaty negotiated by political leaders who are still operating from a foundation of fear, nationalism, and historical grievance will lack the stability and commitment needed to endure. The moment political circumstances shift, or a new trigger for conflict emerges, such agreements can unravel.

True, lasting peace requires that the people themselves—the populations of warring nations—undergo a shift in perspective and emotion. This is far more difficult to engineer than signing an agreement, but it is also far more durable. When people genuinely no longer want war, when they see the futility of it and recognize their common humanity with those on the other side, wars cannot be sustained, regardless of what politicians say.

The Role of Individual Consciousness in Global Conflict

Sadhguru's analysis carries an important implication: individual inner work matters on a global scale. While it might seem that personal meditation, emotional development, or spiritual practice is irrelevant to stopping wars, his perspective suggests otherwise. To the degree that individuals become more emotionally stable, more connected to others, and less driven by fear and tribal identity, the entire human ecosystem shifts. Such individuals are less likely to support warmongering leaders, more likely to empathize with those labeled as enemies, and more capable of making decisions based on wisdom rather than reactivity.

This does not absolve political and military leaders of responsibility for their decisions; rather, it suggests that the conditions under which warlike decisions seem necessary or justified are created partly by the state of consciousness of entire populations. A population gripped by fear and nationalist fervor will support aggressive foreign policies; a population that is emotionally stable and sees across lines of nationality will resist them.

Where to Go From Here

Sadhguru's framework for understanding prolonged conflict offers a radical reorientation: instead of focusing exclusively on political solutions, military strategies, or diplomatic negotiations, it points toward the necessity of transformation at the level of human consciousness. This does not mean abandoning political and diplomatic efforts, but rather recognizing their limitations and complementing them with initiatives that foster inner stability, emotional maturity, and an expanded sense of human identity and connection.

For individuals, this points toward personal practices that develop emotional resilience, clarity, and connection—whether through meditation, yoga, contemplative practice, or other means of cultivating inner awareness. For societies, it suggests the value of educational initiatives that foster empathy, critical thinking about narratives and propaganda, and awareness of shared human vulnerabilities and interests. Movements toward environmental sustainability and collective problem-solving, like the Save Soil initiative, also offer pathways toward reconfiguring human relationships from competition and conflict toward cooperation and interdependence.

The war in Ukraine and other global conflicts will not be resolved through military victory alone, nor through diplomacy that ignores the emotional and psychological states of those involved. Resolution requires a genuine shift in how human beings perceive themselves and one another—a recognition that our destinies are bound together and that lasting security comes not through domination but through the cultivation of wisdom, stability, and genuine connection across all lines of division.

Frequently Asked Questions

Military force addresses behavior and external outcomes but does not transform the inner states of consciousness—fear, resentment, tribal identity—that generate the impulse toward conflict in the first place. Once military pressure ceases, these underlying psychological conditions remain intact, allowing conflicts to resurface.
Fear makes populations willing to support war as self-defense or self-preservation. When people feel existentially threatened, they become receptive to nationalist rhetoric and military action. This fear can be manipulated by leaders and media, entrenching support for conflict without addressing root causes.
Peace treaties negotiated by leaders still operating from fear and nationalism remain fragile and temporary. Lasting peace requires that populations themselves undergo a shift in perspective and emotion—recognizing shared humanity with those labeled as enemies—not just agreements between governments.
Individual inner stability, emotional maturity, and expanded sense of human connection shift the entire ecosystem. People who are emotionally grounded are less likely to support warmongering leaders and more capable of decision-making based on wisdom rather than reactivity.
Genuine resolution requires transformation at the level of human consciousness—a shift toward recognizing interconnectedness and cultivating emotional stability and wisdom. This must accompany, not replace, diplomatic efforts and include systematic changes toward cooperation on shared problems like environmental sustainability.
Yes, according to this perspective. As individuals develop emotional resilience, clarity, and connection through contemplative practice, they become less susceptible to fear-based narratives and more capable of supporting peaceful policies. A population's consciousness shapes the conditions under which leaders can sustain conflict.
